Welcome to the InScribe Instructional Externship Program!

Philosophy

An InScribe University extern is a student or graduate in medical transcription or other qualified field gaining supervised practical experience in healthcare documentation.  To that end, it is the philosophy of the InScribe University Externship to ensure each extern receives professional supervision and guidance by qualified, advanced-level medical transcription practitioners and/or educators (instructors/mentors) who oversee and assess each extern on a regular basis.  The instructor/mentor shall provide adequate and timely feedback, counsel externs regarding HIPAA regulations and healthcare documentation where appropriate, and ensure each extern is achieving ongoing progress in preparation for their live externship or, if achieving a qualifying score on a formal evaluation based on exemplary performance, applying for independent contractor status with InScribe.  Each InScribe University extern is a valuable member of the InScribe family and vital to our future success.

InScribe Extern – Definition:  An InScribe University extern is a student or graduate in medical transcription or other qualified field gaining supervised practical experience in healthcare documentation.  Externships are training programs that are part of a course of study of an educational institution and are taken in private business in return for an opportunity to develop business skills, learn more about an industry, and gain exposure to the work environment.  At the point of externship/clinical/practicum, it is expected that an extern will have independent grammar/ punctuation/ spelling skills, critical thinking skills, understanding of medical terminology, proofreading and research skills, a basic working knowledge of research, and is able to implement this information and function independently under supervision with minimal instruction/feedback.  Externships are not compensated through wages.

Think of it like this, when one goes to school to be a nurse, they finish the coursework and move on to their clinicals.  The clinical portion provides them an environment in which to implement their knowledge acquired through coursework.  A nursing student would not be able to participate in a clinical without the basic knowledge and skills, i.e. dosing a medication.  They learn all this through their coursework behind the scenes, bring this newly acquired knowledge into their clinical environment, and get the hands-on experience.  You would not want a nursing student “guessing” on how much medicine they are going to give you, would you?

The InScribe Externship shall prepare students and graduates:

  • To demonstrate competency in the core discipline of healthcare documentation;
  • To be employed as independent contractor or facility-based healthcare documentation specialists;
  • To produce the highest quality healthcare documentation in the industry;
  • To have opportunities to develop ethical standards and problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, electronic technology, and HIPAA education, and leadership skills; and
  • To develop leadership skills by actively participating in the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) and other local, state, regional, and national professional organizations.

InScribe University is a PROUD Educational Member of AHDI,
